
Simone Grosso graduated with a Master's degree in Chemical Sciences from the University of Milan (Italy) in 2017, under the supervision of Prof. Cesare Gennari, where he focused on the total synthesis of a novel macrocyclic peptidomimetic. In 2018, he joined the Italian National Research Council in Milan where he worked on the synthesis of dihydrobenzofuran derivatives using copper-containing laccases as biocatalysts. In 2019, he moved to Belgium, where he started a joint PhD program in Organic Chemistry at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Université Catholique de Louvain, under the supervision of Prof. Gwilherm Evano and Prof. Olivier Riant. His doctoral research focused on the development of novel copper-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, with an emphasis on three main areas: aminocarbonylative coupling reactions, the stereoselective synthesis of trifluoromethylated alkenes using vinylsiloxanes, and the carbonylative arylation of alkenes based on the generation of acylzirconocene complexes and the use of hypervalent iodonium salts. After completing his PhD in Belgium in 2022, he returned to Milan, where he joined Dipharma's R&D unit as a Chemical Researcher, working on the total synthesis of Migalastat. In 2025, he was awarded a Cariplo-funded postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Milan under the supervision of Prof. Alessandro Caselli and Prof. Emma Gallo. His research focused on the development of a novel catalytic methodology for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and carbon dioxide using zinc-based catalysts containing tetraazamacrocyclic ligands. In 2026, he moved to Spain to join the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) in Tarragona, under the supervision of Prof. Elena Fernández. His current research focuses on developing new copper-catalyzed borylative cross-coupling reactions and a novel gold-catalyzed methodology for the synthesis of highly functionalized cyclopropanes using gold-based catalysts containing halo-borylsilyl carbenoid species.
