Joan was born in Tarragona, Spain and obtained his BSc in Chemistry from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) in 2025. This included a fully funded two-month stay in the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) for a summer research internship in 2024 as well as a four-month placement in the University of Edinburgh (UoE) to develop his bachelor's thesis. In his thesis, supervised by Professor Stephen P. Thomas, he focused on the development on novel methodology for catalytic reductive amination of esters using Lewis Acid catalysts. Joan joined the CatBorChem in September 2025 to begin his MChem URV-ICIQ in Synthesis, Catalysis and Molecular Design under the supervision of Professor Elena Fernández focused on the development of organoboron chemistry to build highly strained polyfunctionalized cyclic systems.
